Day 4: How to Hit Low, Penetrating Golf Shots

In his long career as a superintendent, he’d been party to dozens of helicopter drops — popular prize-giveaways in which a helicopter drops a motherlode of golf balls toward a target. The owner of the ball that lands closest to the center of the target — in this case, the center of the X — wins. Read more about Golf Ball Air Cannon here. Now, whether Matt enjoys playing golf as much as I do is beyond my realm of knowledge, but when he brought out a golf ball cannon to his homemade range, my ears definitely perked up.

This is also why you see so many TM tour issue heads online for sale. But what we don’t know is how big the size or shape of that sweet spot around the center might be – or how fast the ball speed might fall off relative to the distance from the center for any direction. “Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron.”

Higher altitudes do not have an impact on spin, but they do influence lift, so your ball will have greater difficulty reaching the heights it may at sea level. Expect shots to have a flatter trajectory, less grip and more roll out on greens and fairways. The lower density also means less force will be imparted on the ball, reducing slice and hook. The essence
of this cannon is that a small roll shot (or stop shot) is played once the
balls are in position. The roll shot however is towards the boundary which
does not move the original ball and both the striker’s ball and croqueted ball
are moved to inside the yard line area.

With practice and analysis, golfers can gain control over ball speeds for improved performance. These were on different days, so temperature wasn’t identical, but it was close. Obviously I’m not a robot, so I might been swinging differently. And there are a number of possible physical explanations including a defective Ping head, but it seems others are seeing similar results.

So there will be one ball that optimizes launch conditions for them. However, switch the driver or change the swing, and the optimized ball can also change. That’s why comparing distances of balls is a fools errand. The things that are important are ball speed, launch, and spin. Distance can only be compared if you shoot the balls out of a cannon with the exact same launch conditions.

Drivers maximize ball speeds due to their low loft, large clubhead, and long shaft. Tour players and long drivers can even exceed 200 mph ball speeds with their biggest drives. For most amateurs, driver ball speeds fall in the 110–150 mph range depending on swing speed. With the shotgun about to get underway, there was little time to waste.
